The Division That Defined an Identity
The estate traces its origins to the vast Domaine de Pichon Longueville, established in the late 17th century. Following the death of Baron Joseph de Pichon Longueville in 1850, the property was divided among his five children. The portion inherited by his three daughters became known as Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, named after Virginie de Pichon Longueville, Comtesse de Lalande.
This newly formed estate retained approximately three-fifths of the original domaine and was recognised as a Second Growth in the 1855 Classification. Over the following decades, the château developed a distinct identity, one increasingly defined by elegance and aromatic complexity rather than the sheer power typical of Pauillac.
A Signature Shaped by Merlot
What sets Pichon Comtesse apart from many Pauillac estates is the significant proportion of Merlot in its vineyard plantings and final blends. While Cabernet Sauvignon remains dominant, Merlot typically accounts for a higher percentage than is customary on the Left Bank, occasionally reaching 35 to 40 per cent in certain vintages.
This composition lends the Grand Vin its characteristic silky texture, floral aromatics and supple tannins. The result is a wine that balances concentration and structure with remarkable finesse and accessibility, offering both immediate appeal and exceptional longevity. Pichon Comtesse demonstrates that Pauillac need not be austere in youth to achieve greatness with age.
Gravel, Proximity and the Gironde
The estate's 89 hectares are planted on deep Gunzian gravel beds, formed during the Quaternary period and situated immediately adjacent to the boundary with Saint-Julien. These warm, well-draining soils are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, encouraging early ripening and concentrated fruit expression.
Proximity to the Gironde estuary creates a moderating influence on temperature, reducing the risk of spring frost and helping to preserve freshness during warm vintages. The vineyard's gentle slopes and favourable exposition further contribute to even ripening and the aromatic complexity that has become synonymous with the château.
Precision and Consistency Across Vintages
