Château Margaux

Château Margaux is one of only five estates classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé in the historic 1855 Classification of Bordeaux. Based in the Margaux appellation on the Left Bank of the Gironde, the château has been guided by the Mentzelopoulos family since 1977, with current leadership under Corinne Mentzelopoulos. A Premier Cru Defined by Elegance

When the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification was established in 1855, Château Margaux was ranked as one of the four red wine estates—alongside Lafite Rothschild, Latour and Haut-Brion—to receive the Premier Cru designation. A fifth, Mouton Rothschild, would join this group more than a century later. From the outset, Margaux was recognised not for power alone but for a particular refinement and aromatic purity that distinguished it within the Médoc.

The estate's reputation was built across centuries, but it entered a transformative period in 1977 when André Mentzelopoulos acquired the property. Significant investment in vineyard management, cellar infrastructure and winemaking precision restored the château to the summit of Bordeaux. Following André's death in 1980, his daughter Corinne Mentzelopoulos assumed leadership and has continued to uphold the estate's exacting standards.

The Gravel Terroir of Margaux

The vineyards of Château Margaux rest on some of the deepest gravel beds in the Médoc, a geological legacy of the Günz glaciation. These well-drained soils, composed of Pyrenean pebbles over limestone and clay subsoils, create ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, which typically accounts for around 75% of the Grand Vin's blend in most vintages.

The proximity of the Gironde estuary moderates temperatures and protects against frost, while the gravel's exceptional drainage encourages deep rooting and concentrated fruit. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are planted across parcels where soil composition shifts slightly, allowing the estate to craft a blend of remarkable balance and aromatic complexity.

The approximately 90 hectares under vine are managed with meticulous attention to soil health, canopy balance and sustainable practices, ensuring that each parcel contributes its finest expression to the final assemblage.

The Grand Vin and Its Companions

The Grand Vin de Château Margaux represents the pinnacle of the estate's ambition. It is traditionally characterised by profound aromatic complexity—violet, blackcurrant, graphite and spice—supported by finely textured tannins and a structure built for extended ageing. Maturation takes place in new French oak barrels for approximately 18 to 24 months, adding layers of refinement without overwhelming the wine's intrinsic elegance.

Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, introduced in 1908, is the estate's second wine and offers a more approachable expression of Margaux's terroir. It is composed primarily of fruit from younger vines and parcels that do not meet the exacting standards for the Grand Vin.

Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux occupies a unique position within the estate. Produced entirely from Sauvignon Blanc grown on 12 hectares of limestone and clay soils, it is one of Bordeaux's most distinguished white wines. While it cannot carry the Margaux AOC designation—which applies only to red wines—it reflects the same commitment to precision, terroir expression and ageing potential that defines the estate's red wines.

Precision Across Generations

Winemaking at Château Margaux combines traditional methods with modern understanding. Parcel-by-parcel vinification in temperature-controlled wooden and concrete vats preserves the individuality of each plot before blending. The final assemblage is determined through rigorous tasting, with only the finest lots selected for the Grand Vin.

The result is a wine that balances immediate aromatic appeal with the structure required for decades of evolution. Bottles from exceptional vintages can develop gracefully for 50 years or more, gaining complexity, tertiary nuance and a seamless integration of fruit, tannin and acidity. Across centuries and changes in ownership, Château Margaux has remained a benchmark for elegance, refinement and the enduring potential of Bordeaux's finest terroirs.
