The Union of Pétrus and Inglenook

Christian Moueix first travelled to Napa Valley in the 1960s while studying at the University of California, Davis. He returned in the early 1980s with the vision of applying the precision and patience of Right Bank Bordeaux winemaking to an exceptional California site. In 1983, he entered into partnership with the Daniel sisters—Marcia Smith and Robin Lail—retaining the Napanook vineyard from their family's storied Inglenook holdings.

Moueix acquired full ownership in 1995, solidifying his long-term commitment to the estate and establishing Dominus as an independent expression of Yountville terroir shaped by a singular winemaking philosophy.

The Historic Napanook Vineyard

The Napanook vineyard occupies approximately 124 acres on the western side of Yountville, where alluvial deposits from the Mayacamas Mountains meet the floor of the Napa Valley. Its soils—principally gravel and sandy loam—provide excellent drainage and moderate vine vigour, encouraging balanced ripening and concentrated flavour development.

The vineyard benefits from the cooling influence of San Pablo Bay to the south, which tempers Napa's warmth and extends the growing season. This interplay between soil, exposure and climate creates conditions particularly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the estate's principal varieties.

Meticulous parcel selection and vine-by-vine farming allow each block to be harvested at optimal maturity. Yields are deliberately restrained, typically ranging between two and three tons per acre, ensuring depth and structure without excessive extraction.

Bordeaux Discipline in Napa

Christian Moueix's approach emphasises restraint, patience and fidelity to site. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled wooden vats, followed by extended élevage in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new. The resulting wines are neither formulaic nor overly ripe, but rather precise, harmonious and built to evolve over decades.

The flagship Dominus is typically composed of around 85 to 90 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, blended with smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and occasionally Merlot. It combines dark fruit concentration, fine-grained tannins and pronounced minerality with a sense of balance and restraint uncommon in Napa Cabernet.

Napanook, introduced as a second wine, offers earlier accessibility while retaining the estate's signature elegance. Othello, produced only in select vintages, reflects Moueix's ongoing exploration of the vineyard's expressive range. Together, these wines present a complete portrait of Napanook's terroir, distinguished by structure, finesse and the unmistakable imprint of Bordeaux craftsmanship applied to one of Yountville's most celebrated sites.

Napa Valley

Napa Valley is the most prestigious wine region in the United States and has become synonymous with world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and premium winemaking. Located in Northern California approximately 80 kilometres north of San Francisco, the valley combines exceptional growing conditions with pioneering innovation, producing wines that consistently rank among the finest in the world. Since the famous 1976 Judgment of Paris, when Napa wines triumphed over prestigious Bordeaux châteaux in a blind tasting, the region has established itself as one of the great wine regions alongside Bordeaux and Burgundy.

Despite covering a relatively small area of approximately 19,000 hectares, Napa Valley contains an extraordinary diversity of soils, elevations and microclimates across 16 distinct AVAs. Cool morning fog from San Pablo Bay moderates temperatures in the southern Carneros and Oak Knoll districts, providing ideal conditions for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, while warmer northern appellations such as Calistoga and St. Helena favour bold Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. Mountain districts including Howell Mountain, Mount Veeder and Diamond Mountain produce wines of exceptional structure and complexity from volcanic and sedimentary soils. Benchmark appellations such as Oakville, Rutherford and Stags Leap District each contribute unique expressions of terroir, with Rutherford's famed "Rutherford Dust" tannins and Stags Leap's elegant, refined style.

The region is home to many internationally acclaimed estates, including Screaming Eagle, Opus One, Harlan Estate, Dominus Estate, Shafer Vineyards, Caymus Vineyards, Cakebread Cellars and Spottswoode. These producers represent a culture of meticulous vineyard management, sustainable viticulture and uncompromising quality that has made Napa Valley one of the world's most respected and collectible wine destinations.

Grapes
Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world’s most important and widely planted red wine grapes, renowned for its powerful structure, concentrated fruit and exceptional ageing potential. Originating in Bordeaux, France, the variety has become a defining grape of fine wine regions around the world, particularly Napa Valley, Tuscany, Chile, Australia and South Africa.

Classic Cabernet Sauvignon combines flavours and aromas of blackcurrant, cassis, blackberry and dark cherry with characteristic notes of cedar, graphite, tobacco and herbs. Naturally high tannins and fresh acidity provide structure and longevity, while maturation in oak can add layers of spice, vanilla and toast. Its character varies significantly with climate, soil and winemaking, ranging from elegant and savoury to rich, powerful and intensely concentrated.

In Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon is particularly associated with the Left Bank, where it forms the foundation of many prestigious blends alongside Merlot, Cabernet Franc and other permitted varieties. In Napa Valley, it has become the region’s signature red grape, producing some of the world’s most sought-after Cabernet Sauvignon wines.

Cabernet Sauvignon’s ability to express terroir while retaining its distinctive structure and character has made it a global benchmark for premium red wine. Whether produced as the dominant variety in a blend or as a varietal wine, the finest examples combine concentration, complexity and the capacity to develop gracefully over decades

Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Franc is one of France’s most historic red wine grapes, valued for its aromatic intensity, vibrant acidity and ability to express both climate and soil with remarkable clarity. It produces elegant single-varietal wines and plays an essential role in some of Bordeaux’s most distinguished blends. Earlier ripening than Cabernet Sauvignon allows Cabernet Franc to perform particularly well in cooler wine regions.

In the Loire Valley, Cabernet Franc reaches its clearest expression as a varietal wine. Typical aromas include redcurrant, raspberry, red cherry and violet, often accompanied by graphite, dried herbs, tobacco and subtle peppery notes. Naturally fresh acidity and finely structured tannins can produce approachable, fruit-driven wines as well as complex examples capable of developing for many years.

The variety is especially important in Chinon, Bourgueil and Saumur-Champigny. Chinon can range from fragrant and supple to deeply structured and age-worthy, depending on vineyard site and soil. Bourgueil often combines dark red fruit with firm structure, while Saumur-Champigny is renowned for freshness, aromatic purity and refined texture. Limestone-rich tuffeau, gravel, sand and clay all contribute to the diversity of Cabernet Franc across these Loire appellations.

In Bordeaux, Cabernet Franc is principally associated with the Right Bank, particularly Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. Usually blended with Merlot and sometimes Cabernet Sauvignon, it contributes perfume, freshness, savoury complexity and structural precision. On suitable limestone and clay terroirs, Cabernet Franc can become a dominant component of exceptionally refined and long-lived wines.

Beyond France, Cabernet Franc is cultivated in regions including Tuscany, Bolgheri, Napa Valley, Washington State, Canada, Argentina and Chile, producing styles shaped by local climate and terroir. Traditionally known as Breton in the Loire and Bouchet in parts of Bordeaux, Cabernet Franc’s combination of aromatic elegance, freshness and ageing potential establishes it as one of the world’s great red wine varieties.

Petit Verdot

Petit Verdot is a powerful red wine grape from south-west France, best known as a small but distinctive component of the classic red blends of Bordeaux. Its deeply coloured wines, firm tannins and concentrated aromatics allow even modest proportions to add structure, freshness and intensity alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

On Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Petit Verdot is particularly associated with the gravel soils of the Médoc, including appellations such as Margaux, Saint-Julien, Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe. The variety buds relatively early but ripens late, making complete maturation challenging in cooler vintages. When fully ripe, it can retain vibrant acidity while developing considerable colour, tannin and aromatic complexity.

Typical expressions show blackberry, black cherry, blueberry and plum, accompanied by violet, liquorice, pepper, cocoa and other dark spices. In Bordeaux blends, Petit Verdot is generally used in limited quantities to reinforce colour, tannic structure and aromatic depth. Its combination of acidity and tannin can also contribute significantly to a wine’s ageing potential.

Beyond Bordeaux, warmer and more reliable growing conditions have allowed Petit Verdot to achieve greater ripeness and a more prominent role. Producers in California, Australia, Spain and South America increasingly use the variety in both Bordeaux-style blends and varietal wines. These expressions are often full-bodied and deeply coloured, with ripe dark fruit, floral character, spice and powerful tannins.

From its historic role in the Médoc to its expanding presence as a varietal wine, Petit Verdot is defined by colour, structure, freshness and aromatic intensity. Once regarded primarily as a supporting grape, it is increasingly recognised as a distinctive variety capable of producing serious, age-worthy wines in its own right.

History and Style

Dominus is the flagship wine of Dominus Estate, a property that has redefined Napa Valley winemaking since Christian Moueix established it in 1983. The grandson of the founder of Château Pétrus, Moueix brought a distinctly Bordelais approach to California viticulture, seeking to express terroir over power and finesse over extraction.

Vineyard, Terroir and Style

The estate centers on the historic Napanook Vineyard in Yountville, a site with exceptional alluvial soils and a unique microclimate influenced by both San Pablo Bay breezes and the valley's warm days. These 124 acres of meticulously farmed vines, some dating back to the 1960s, form the foundation of Dominus. The vineyard is farmed organically, with an emphasis on balanced canopies, natural yields, and minimal intervention—principles Moueix refined over decades in Bordeaux.

History and Reputation

Dominus is typically a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend with varying proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the exact composition determined by each vintage's character. The wine undergoes traditional vinification with extended maceration and ageing in French oak, resulting in a structured yet refined profile. Expect dense dark fruit, graphite minerality, tobacco, violet florals, and fine-grained tannins that evolve gracefully over decades. Unlike many Napa Cabernets, Dominus emphasizes restraint, balance, and European elegance.

With 20-30+ years of ageing potential, Dominus appeals to collectors and connoisseurs seeking benchmark Napa Valley wine with old-world sensibility. Compare prices on Sipfind to secure this iconic estate's flagship expression.
