A Deliberate Departure from Tradition
When Bill Samuels Sr. purchased the old Burks' Distillery site in 1953, he set out to create a bourbon fundamentally different from those made by previous generations of his family. Dissatisfied with the sharp, grain-forward character common to bourbon at the time, he famously burned the family's traditional rye-based recipe and began experimenting with alternative grains.
Working alongside his wife Margie Samuels, who would later design the distillery's iconic packaging, Bill tested loaves of bread baked with different grain combinations. The result was a mash bill built around soft red winter wheat rather than the customary rye. This substitution gave the whiskey a gentler, sweeter profile and became the defining characteristic of Maker's Mark.
The Wheat Signature
Red winter wheat forms the cornerstone of the Maker's Mark mash bill, alongside corn and malted barley. The absence of rye removes the spiciness and bite typical of most bourbons, creating instead a rounder, more delicate spirit marked by vanilla, caramel and soft oak.
The wheat is sourced locally and milled at the distillery before fermentation and distillation in traditional copper pot stills. Maker's Mark matures in climate-controlled warehouses using charred American oak barrels, rotating barrels between floors to ensure consistency across batches. The limestone-filtered water drawn from the distillery's own spring contributes mineral character and softness.
This approach yields a bourbon recognisable for its approachable smoothness and balance, qualities that distinguished Maker's Mark when it launched and continue to define the house style today.
Hand-Dipped in Red Wax
Margie Samuels conceived the distillery's most enduring visual signature: the hand-dipped red wax seal. Inspired by a collection of cognac bottles she had seen during her travels, she proposed sealing each bottle individually by hand rather than applying a standard capsule or closure.
The process remains unchanged. Every bottle of Maker's Mark is inverted and dipped into melted red wax, creating a distinctive drip pattern unique to each one. This labour-intensive tradition reinforces the distillery's commitment to small-batch craftsmanship and has become synonymous with the brand itself.
The Maker's Mark Portfolio
The flagship Maker's Mark Bourbon anchors the range, delivering the soft wheat character and balanced sweetness that built the distillery's reputation. Maker's Mark 46 introduces French oak staves inserted into the barrel during maturation, adding layers of vanilla, caramel and baking spice without sacrificing the core smoothness.
Maker's Mark Cask Strength offers the same wheat-forward profile at higher proof, appealing to collectors and enthusiasts seeking greater intensity and concentration. Limited wood-finishing series explore further variations in oak influence, extending the distillery's experimentation while remaining rooted in the wheat-based foundation established in 1953.
