An Imperial Legacy
Champagne Louis Roederer earned its place in history in 1876 when Louis Roederer II created a singular prestige cuvée for Tsar Alexander II of Russia. Presented in a flat-bottomed clear crystal bottle to satisfy the Tsar's concern for safety and transparency, this exceptional Champagne became known simply as Cristal.
The Imperial Court of Russia remained the house's most important client until the Russian Revolution. Nearly a century and a half later, Cristal endures as one of the benchmarks of luxury Champagne and a symbol of Roederer's uncompromising approach to quality.
The Foundation of Independence
Roederer's defining characteristic lies in its unusually extensive vineyard holdings. With approximately 240 hectares under direct control, the house owns a greater proportion of its vineyard sources than nearly any other major Champagne producer, supplying roughly 70% of its needs from estate fruit.
This ownership extends across some of Champagne's most esteemed terroirs, including Grand Cru sites in Verzenay, Verzy and Ay. Such breadth allows the house to select parcels with exceptional precision, blending across soil types, expositions and grape varieties to achieve the balance and complexity that define the Roederer style. Control from vine to bottle ensures consistency of quality and enables a patient, terroir-focused approach to viticulture.
The house follows sustainable practices throughout its vineyards, intervening minimally and allowing each site to express its individual character. This philosophy extends into the cellar, where traditional méthode champenoise production preserves finesse and clarity.
Cristal and the Roederer Portfolio
At the summit of the portfolio stands Cristal, produced only in exceptional vintages from the finest parcels of Grand Cru Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Extended ageing on lees and careful dosage create a Champagne of luminous purity, refined texture and extraordinary longevity, capable of evolving gracefully for 20 to 30 years or more.
Brut Premier, the house's signature non-vintage cuvée, demonstrates Roederer's blending mastery across a broader canvas. Combining estate fruit with long ageing and careful reserve wine integration, it offers elegance, balance and the structured freshness characteristic of the house style.
The Vintage, Blanc de Blancs and Vintage Rosé complete the range, each reflecting the same meticulous attention to parcel selection, gentle winemaking and patient maturation that have distinguished Roederer for nearly two and a half centuries.
