J. & A. Mitchell & Co is a family-owned spirits merchant and independent bottler with deep roots in Campbeltown, Scotland's most remote and historically significant whisky region. Established in the 19th century and operated by the Mitchell family for five generations, the company became closely associated with Springbank Distillery, one of the last independently owned distilleries in Scotland. The firm represents a rare continuity of family stewardship, local production and traditional Campbeltown whisky craft.

A Family Rooted in Campbeltown Whisky

The Mitchell family's connection to Campbeltown whisky predates the formal establishment of J. & A. Mitchell & Co by half a century. In 1828, Archibald Mitchell founded the original Springbank distillery, and by 1837 his sons John and William had secured full ownership of the site. When John and Archibald Mitchell established J. & A. Mitchell & Co in 1887, they formalised the family's role as both distillers and independent wine and spirits merchants.

Campbeltown was once home to more than thirty operating distilleries, earning recognition as the Victorian whisky capital of Scotland. Today, Springbank is one of only three surviving distilleries in the town and remains the sole producer entirely owned and operated by a local family.

Three Expressions, One Distillery

Springbank Distillery produces three distinct single malt ranges, each defined by different production methods and maturation profiles. Springbank itself is lightly peated and distilled two-and-a-half times, a practice unique to the distillery that contributes to a rich, complex and slightly oily character. Longrow is heavily peated and double-distilled, offering a robust, smoky style reminiscent of Islay. Hazelburn is unpeated and triple-distilled, yielding a lighter, more delicate expression with floral and citrus notes.

This versatility within a single production site reflects both the distillery's technical flexibility and the Mitchell family's commitment to preserving diverse expressions of Campbeltown whisky.

Traditional Methods and Complete Control

Springbank remains one of the few distilleries in Scotland to malt a portion of its own barley on traditional floor maltings. The distillery also employs direct-fired stills, a labour-intensive practice that requires constant manual adjustment but contributes additional depth and texture to the spirit. Every stage of production—from malting and mashing to distillation, maturation and bottling—takes place onsite, ensuring complete oversight and traceability.

This vertical integration allows the Mitchell family to maintain exacting quality standards and preserve methods that have largely disappeared elsewhere in the Scotch whisky industry. The result is a portfolio of single malts that express the character, heritage and enduring independence of Campbeltown whisky.

Campbeltown

Campbeltown is a historic whisky-producing region located on the Kintyre Peninsula in southwestern Scotland. Once home to more than thirty distilleries in the 19th century, the region is now recognised for characterful, maritime-influenced single malt Scotch whiskies produced by a small number of respected distilleries. Despite its reduced scale, Campbeltown retains a distinct identity within Scotch whisky, celebrated for robust, complex expressions shaped by coastal influences and traditional production methods.

The region's whiskies are known for their distinctive maritime character, combining rich malt sweetness with briny, saline notes and hints of smoke, dried fruit and subtle peat. Notable producers including Springbank, Glen Scotia and Glengyle maintain traditional floor malting and direct-fired stills, crafting single malts of notable depth and complexity. Springbank in particular is respected for producing entirely on-site, from malting through to bottling, a practice rarely seen in modern Scotch whisky production. These distilleries represent a regional benchmark for artisanal craftsmanship and uncompromising quality.

This dedication to traditional craftsmanship is evident in every bottle of Springbank 18.

Matured for 18 years in a combination of sherry and bourbon casks, this expression develops layers of flavour that reflect both Campbeltown's coastal influence and careful wood management.
