A Vision Born in Dufftown
William Grant founded the distillery in 1887 after decades working in the whisky industry. With the assistance of his nine children and a single stonemason, he built Glenfiddich by hand over the course of a year, commissioning second-hand stills and laying the foundations for what would become a benchmark Speyside producer.
The first spirit ran from the stills on Christmas Day 1887. More than 135 years later, the distillery remains under the ownership and direction of William Grant's descendants, a continuity rare among Scotland's major distilleries.
The Robbie Dhu Springs and Traditional Craft
Glenfiddich draws its water from the Robbie Dhu springs, a source prized for its soft, mineral character. This water shapes every stage of production, from mashing carefully selected barley to diluting spirit before maturation and bottling.
The distillery continues to operate traditional floor malting for a portion of its production, giving direct control over the quality and character of the malted barley. Copper pot stills produce a spirit that balances fruitiness with structure, a foundation for the house style that defines the entire range.
Glenfiddich is also one of the few distilleries to maintain a full cooperage on site. Every cask used for maturation is inspected, repaired and prepared by the distillery's own coopers, ensuring consistency and precision across hundreds of thousands of barrels.
Maturation in European and American Oak
Extended ageing in a combination of European oak sherry casks and American oak bourbon barrels shapes the layered character of Glenfiddich single malt. The interplay between these cask types contributes honeyed sweetness, dried fruit, vanilla and subtle spice.
Glenfiddich 18 Year Old exemplifies this approach, spending its full maturation in a combination of Oloroso sherry and bourbon casks before final marrying in small oak tuns. The result is a whisky of depth, elegance and gentle complexity, with orchard fruit, baked apple, oak spice and a rounded, warming finish.
The 15 Year Old Solera Reserve uses a solera system more commonly associated with sherry production, blending whiskies of varying ages in a large vat that is never fully emptied. This technique creates continuity and richness across every bottling.
A Benchmark Speyside Range
Glenfiddich's portfolio spans approachable entry-level expressions to highly sought-after age-statement and limited releases. The 12 Year Old offers a fresh, accessible introduction to the house style, while older expressions reveal greater concentration, oak influence and evolving aromatic complexity.
The distillery's commitment to innovation within a traditional framework has earned it recognition from collectors and whisky enthusiasts worldwide. Each release reflects the precision, independence and family stewardship that have defined Glenfiddich since William Grant laid its first stone.
